2021

March-July, 2021 – Provided five monthly sessions, two hours each, of Virtual Camp Celiac for children with celiac disease and other gluten-related disorders. Due to the pandemic, in-person Camp Celiac at Camp Arroyo had to be canceled.

2019

November 16-17, 2019 – Celiac Community Foundation of Northern California provided a booth with information and educational materials, with medical questions addressed by volunteer Neha Shah, MPH, RD, at the Nourished Festival in San Mateo, CA.

July 21-27, 2019 – Administered two sessions of overnight summer camp for over 200 children with celiac disease and non-celiac gluten sensitivity at Camp Celiac at Camp Arroyo, in its thirteenth year, in partnership with The Taylor Family Foundation.  www.celiaccamp.org

January-March 2019 – Guided student project to survey Bay Area food banks on ability to accommodate medical dietary restrictions, year round and in disaster circumstances, and interest in improving capacity to do so.

2018

November 2018 – Worked with community partners, including Margaret Walsh of Beyond Celiac, and Peninsula Food Runners, to help organize the pick up and delivery of 2,000 pounds of gluten-free and allergen-friendly food to the Camp Fire disaster relief effort in Paradise, CA, food banks in the South Bay and Samaritan House. The food was donated by vendors at the Gluten Free & Allergen Friendly Expo in San Mateo. This was part of our ongoing work as a member of the Gluten-Free Disaster Relief Task Force.

July 22-28, 2018 – Administered two sessions of overnight summer camp for over 200 children with celiac disease and non-celiac gluten sensitivity at Camp Celiac at Camp Arroyo, in its twelfth year, in partnership with The Taylor Family Foundation. www.celiaccamp.org

May 12, 2018 – Helped organize and participate in a Day of Service at Camp Arroyo to help prepare for all the summer camps hosted by The Taylor Family Foundation. Organized through the Yale Day of Service.

April/May 2018 – Helped initiate and publicize FDA recall in 11 states of Van’s Gluten-Free Waffles that mistakenly contained wheat-based waffles.

December 2017/January 2018 – As a member of the Gluten-Free Disaster Relief Task Force, our foundation helped support the relief effort in response to fires and mudslides in Southern California.

2017

November 18, 2017 – Co-organizer with Stanford Children’s Health and Stanford Health Care of Stanford Health Day at the Gluten Free & Allergy Friendly Expo in San Mateo

September – November 2017 – Founded the Gluten-Free Disaster Relief Task Force in collaboration with Harvard-affiliated hospital celiac centers and nonprofits in Boston, providing gluten-free/allergy-friendly food assistance to hurricane victims in Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico, and wildfire victims in Northern California

July 1 – Celiac Community Foundation of Northern California partnered with the San Jose Earthquakes on Celiac Disease Awareness Night at the California Clasico soccer game against the L.A. Galaxy at Stanford Stadium. The foundation was the Nonprofit of the Match. Sponsors were Stanford Children’s Health and Muffin Revolution.

June 25, 2017 – The restaurant 3Potato4 in Pleasanton, CA, held a fundraiser for the Celiac Community Foundation of Northern California and Camp Celiac.

June 3, 2017 – Celiac Community Foundation of Northern California board member Jennifer Iscol represented the foundation at the Celiac Disease Foundation National Conference in Los Angeles, and participated as a panel member in training for 100 CDF patient advocates in the “Patients As Partners Research Symposium.” The goal is to train patients to partner with researchers in evaluating funding applications and as ambassadors in Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) outreach.

May 13, 2017 –  The Celiac Community Foundation of Northern California’s NorCal Gluten Free Alliance held a networking gathering hosted by Nima Labs and catered by Pica Pica. Nima provided a lab tour and Q&A. The NorCal Gluten Free Alliance is comprised of support group leaders, gluten-free business owners, physicians and dietitians, scientists and authors.

May 23rd, 2015 –  Celiac Community Foundation of Northern California provided a free public support group at Whole Foods in Coddingtown Mall in Santa Rosa, CA.

April 2015 – Celiac Community Foundation of Northern California  board member Douglas Corley, MD, PhD, MPH, co-edited a special issue of the medical journal Gastroenterology. The issue focused on food, the immune system and the gastrointestinal tract and included two articles on celiac disease and one on non-celiac gluten sensitivity.

April 12, 2015 – Celiac Community Foundation of Northern California provided an information table and educational materials at the gluten-free tasting day at Whole Foods in Campbell, CA.

March 30-31, 2015 – Two board members attended the Gastroenterology Regulatory Endpoints and the Advancement of Therapeutics (GREAT) 3 Workshop organized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Silver Spring, MD.

February 21st, 2014 – Celiac Community Foundation of Northern California provided a free public support group at Whole Foods in Coddingtown Mall in Santa Rosa, CA.

2014

October 26th, 2014 – Our foundation had an information table at the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation walk in San Francisco. One in ten people with Type 1 Diabetes also have celiac disease, but most are undiagnosed. We also handed out educational materials from Beyond Celiac (formerly National Foundation for Celiac Awareness) to help spread awareness.

March 2014 –  Board member Amy Burkhart, MD, RD, gave a presentation at the Culinary Institute of America’s Greystone campus in St. Helena to educate future chefs about safely accommodating gluten-free diners and clientele.

March 20-21, 2014 – A foundation representative attended the Conference on the Development of Therapies for Celiac Disease hosted by the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University in New York, NY, and participated by invitation in a meeting with the North American Society for the Study of Celiac Disease.

March 5th, 2014 – Celiac Community Foundation of Northern California provided a free public support group at Whole Foods in Coddingtown Mall in Santa Rosa, CA.

January 25th & 26th, 2014 – Participated in the Gluten & Allergen Free Expo in San Mateo, CA, providing an information table and educational materials.

December 8th, 2013 – Celiac Community Foundation of Northern California Support Group. Location: Whole Foods, Oakland, CA. March 8th-9th, 2013 – Board member Pamela Walton attended the Immune Based Inflammatory Diseases Symposium hosted by the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University in New York, NY.

March 3rd, 2013 – Board member Amy Burkhart, MD, RD, spoke to our Napa support group at Queen of the Valley hospital with an in-depth Q & A session. Board president Jennifer Iscol provided a wrap-up of national news, events, and the Gluten & Allergen Free Expo. Vendors, including Edison Grainery, supplied gluten-free samples.

February 9-10th, 2013 – CCFNC provided an education table at the Gluten & Allergen Free Expo in Burlingame, CA.

January 26, 2013 – Board member Amy Burkhart, MD, RD, spoke about celiac disease and gluten sensitivity at Whole Foods in Napa as part of their fifth anniversary celebration.

December 2, 2013 – The CCFNC Sonoma County support group met for gluten-free crepes at Crepevine restaurant in Santa Rosa.

2012

October 13th, 2012 – Co-sponsored a gluten-free cooking event at Whole Foods in Los Altos with Bold Organics chef Eric Brenner cooking up and serving a menu of favorites.

October 5, 2012 – In response to a published study about arsenic in rice, CCFNC published a document geared to people on a gluten-free diet. Ellen Switkes, the former leader of the Oakland Celiac Support Group, posed questions to Dr. Luis Espino, Rice Farm Advisor at the University of California Cooperative Extension. http://www.celiaccommunity.org/arsenic-in-rice/

August 19th, 2012 –  Co-sponsored a pressure cooking presentation and sampling by Jill Nusinow, the Veggie QueenThe topic: “Gluten-Free Summer Cooking with Taste and Nutrition in Mind” at the G&G Supermarket demo kitchen in Santa Rosa. Afterwards, a meeting of CCFNC’s Sonoma County support group.

June 23, 2012 – CCFNC’s NorCal Gluten-Free Teens gathered for a special event at a member’s home in Santa Rosa.

May 30th, 2012 – CCFNC was the recipient of Community Giving Day at Whole Foods in Los Altos – 5% of the day’s net sales was donated to support our foundation’s work.

May 6, 2012 – Participated as a team in a nonprofit fundraiser: Sonoma County Human Race put on by the Volunteer Center.

April 14, 2012 – Cosponsored a “Pediatric Celiac Disease Conference” with the Children’s Hospital of Oakland at their Walnut Creek facility. Included medical education for professionals, family education events and a gluten-free vendor fair. Stefano Guandalini, MD, medical director of the University of Chicago Celiac Disease Center, presented lectures, along with his colleague, Lara Field, RD.

April 14, 2012 – Organized the third annual Bay Area Celiac and Gluten-Intolerance Summit of the NorCal Gluten-Free Alliance, an informal networking group of nonprofit leaders, business owners and medical professionals, hosted by Oakland Children’s Hospital in Walnut Creek.

April-June, 2012 – Camp Celiac, administered by CCFNC, was the beneficiary of Whole Foods in Napa’s Nickels for Nonprofits program for this quarter.

March 24, 2012 – CCFNC’s CalCeliac Kids met at a member’s home in Marin for a parent/child support group meeting.

February 12, 2012 – CCFNC Sonoma County Support Group met at Memorial Hospital in Santa Rosa, featuring a presentation and sampling by Feel Good Foods with their gluten-free dumplings and egg rolls.

January 15th, 2012 – CCFNC board member Amy Burkhart, MD, RD, spoke on “Celiac Disease v. Gluten Intolerance” at Queen of the Valley Hospital for the Napa support group. Natural Food Works of Davis sampled their products.

2011

November 21, 2011 – North Bay Celiacs director Jennifer Iscol presented public comments on the Essential Health Benefits package at a Health and Human Services “Listening Session” in San Francisco, advocating for the coverage of medical nutrition therapy. The comments were offered on behalf of both the Celiac Disease Foundation and the American Celiac Disease Alliance.

November 13, 2011 – North Bay Celiacs Sonoma County Support Group met in Santa Rosa at Memorial Hospital. Sur la Table cooking instructor Jennifer Torrey presented “Gluten-Free Holiday Foods.”

October 15, 2011 –   North Bay Celiacs Napa support group met at Queen of the Valley hospital.

August 25th, 2011 – North Bay Celiacs director Jennifer Iscol presented “Celiac Disease and Gluten Intolerance: Get the Facts to Protect Your Health” as part of the Ceres Project lecture series in Santa Rosa.

June 12, 2011 –  North Bay Celiacs Sonoma County Support Group met at Memorial Hospital in Santa Rosa to discuss gluten-free labeling and celiac research.

May 7th, 2011 – Participated as a team in the Sonoma County Human Race to raise money for our Celiac Disease Awareness Campaign, local support activities, Camp Celiac and celiac disease research.

May 4th, 2011 – As the national liaison for the Celiac Disease Foundation, North Bay Celiacs director Jennifer Iscol attended the Gluten-Free Labeling Summit in Washington, D.C., and with a national leadership coalition advocated in Congress and with FDA officials for the expeditious publication of FDA gluten-free labeling rules mandated by Congress in 2004.

April 16, 2011 –  Emily Nock, MD, of Kaiser in Walnut Creek, spoke on “Celiac Disease, Past Present and Future” at the North Bay Celiacs Napa support group at Queen of the Valley hospital.

April 13, 2011 – North Bay Celiacs director Jennifer Iscol provided a gluten-free consultation for Bob Hurley of Hurley’s Restaurant and Bar in Yountville.

March 19, 2011  – Organized the second annual Bay Area Celiac and Gluten-Intolerance Summit for leaders of the gluten-free community, hosted by Oakland Children’s Hospital.

February 20, 2011 – North Bay Celiacs Sonoma County Support Group met at Memorial Hospital in Santa Rosa. 

February 12, 2011 – North Bay Celiacs treasurer Pamela Walton, director Jennifer Iscol and board member Ed Flesch provided a gluten-free consultation for Chef Brandon Guenther at Rocker Oysterfeller’s in Valley Ford.

2010

November 14, 2010 –  North Bay Celiacs Sonoma County Support Group met at Memorial Hospital in Santa Rosa with Kaiser pediatric dietitian Gail Prosser, RD, as the guest speaker.

November 11, 2010 – Co-sponsored “Celiac Disease: An Update,” a talk by Peter HR Green, MD, Director, Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University. Co-sponsored by the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition at U.C. San Francisco Medical Center  and the local Celiac Disease Foundation support groups: North Bay Celiacs, Oakland and Santa Cruz.

October 23, 2010 – Provided a celiac information table for Mariposa Baking’s 3rd Year Anniversary Party in Oakland.

October 10, 2010 – Gluten-Free Fair in Benicia with over 30 vendors, live music and an auction to benefit Camp Celiac. Attended by 600 people. Sponsored by the local support groups of the Celiac Disease Foundation: Solano County Celiacs, North Bay Celiacs and Sacramento Celiacs.

September 8, 2010 –  North Bay Celiacs co-director Jennifer Iscol and Chef Guy Giordanengo provided a gluten-free consultation for Johnny Garlic’s and Tex Wasabi’s restaurants.

August 15, 2010 – North Bay Celiacs Sonoma County Support Group met at Memorial Hospital in Santa Rosa.

July 20, 2010 – North Bay Celiacs sponsored a Gluten-Free Italian Luncheon at Pasta Bella in Sebastopol with speaker Jacqueline Mallorca, author of The Wheat-Free Cook and Gluten-Free Italian.

May 8th, 2010 – Participated as a team in the Sonoma County Human Race to raise money for our Celiac Disease Awareness Campaign, local support activities, and celiac disease research.

April 17, 2010 – North Bay Celiacs Napa support group met at Queen of the Valley hospital in Napa. Amy Burkhart, MD, RD offered a Q&A session.

April 10, 2010 – Provided a celiac information table for Gluten-Free tasting event at Pacific Market in Sebastopol.

March 21, 2010  – Organized the Bay Area Celiac and Gluten-Intolerance Summit for leaders of the gluten-free community, held at Kaiser Hospital in Oakland.

March 18, 2010 – North Bay Celiacs co-director Jennifer Iscol and Chef Guy Giordanengo provided a gluten-free consultation for La Gare Restaurantin Santa Rosa.

March 10, 2010 – Provided celiac educational materials for a Center for Wellbeing Gluten-Free Cooking Class.

February 20th, 2010 –  Gluten-Free Pizza-Making Class in Sonoma County with Chef Guy Giordanengo, hosted by North Bay Celiacs, followed by a support group meeting.

2009

November 8, 2009 – North Bay Celiacs Marin County Support Group met at Marin General Hospital.

October 30, 2009 – Helped organize and participated in the San Francisco Gluten-Free Cooking Spree to help raise awareness and funding for celiac disease in a cooking competition featuring teams of chefs, assisted by regional doctors and media members. Hosted by Beyond Celiac (formerly National Foundation for Celiac Awareness) on Treasure Island. (A memorable event: participants braved extraordinary traffic, a Critical Mass Bike Rally, and limited access to the Bay Bridge, which was closed for repairs, to attend. Did we mention the oil spill in the bay and the 100 mph police pursuit of a carjacker across the closed bridge? Against all odds, the event was a truly wonderful success.)

October 24, 2009 – North Bay Walk to Cure Diabetes. Presented by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. North Bay Celiacs provided a celiac disease education booth at the event in Santa Rosa. Ten percent of people with Type 1 Diabetes also have celiac disease, and the vast majority are undiagnosed. www.walk.jdrf.org.

September 12, 2009 – Whole Foods Napa Gluten-Free Extravaganza. Sampling and food demonstrations. Dr. Amy Burkhart, physician and dietitian, offered a lecture in the Culinary center on “The Difference Between Celiac Disease and Gluten Intolerance,” followed by Q&A. Chef Clare O’Brien, a Culinary Institute of America pastry chef and cookbook author, who specializes in gluten-free recipes, offered the next presentation. Dr. Bukhart and Chef O’Brien are North Bay Celiacs volunteers.

August 18, 2009 – North Bay Celiacs co-director Jennifer Iscol and physician volunteer Amy Burkhart, MD, provided a gluten-free consultation for Pica Pica Restaurant in Napa.

Fall 2008 – North Bay Celiacs volunteer Chef Guy Giordanengo provided gluten-free consultations for the development of gluten-free pizzas at all 18 Bay Area locations of Mary’s Pizza Shack.

June 28, 2008, Free seminar “Beyond the Gluten-Free Diet: Achieving Optimal Wellness with Celiac Disease” by Amy Burkhart, M.D., R.D., discussed complementary approaches to help persons with celiac disease and others on a gluten-free diet achieve optimal wellness. Dr. Burkhart is an emergency medicine physician, a registered dietitian, and studied Integrative Medicine with Dr. Andrew Weil. Central branch of the Sonoma County Library in Santa Rosa.

June 20, 2008 – Class in Ukiah “The Gluten-Free Diet” taught by Joan Wade of Sylvan Border Farm at the Senior Center, 499 Leslie.

June 1, 2008 – Gluten-Free Tasting and Vendor Day at Whole Foods in Sebastopol. Co-sponsored by North Bay Celiacs.
